Children in the Charlotte region who are diagnosed with cancer overwhelmingly turn to Levine Children’s for the care they need. With the support of the community, the hospital’s Torrence E. Hemby Jr. Hematology and Oncology Center has quickly become one of the top pediatric cancer centers in the Southeast.

Levine Children’s serves about 150 new cancer patients each year. The hospital’s Torrence E. Hemby Jr. Hematology and Oncology Center has one of the country’s highest survival rates for pediatric bone marrow transplants, 20 of which were conducted at Levine Children’s Hospital in 2014. The hospital’s Developmental Therapeutics Program (DVL) conducted more than 70 pediatric cancer clinical trials in the past year. The availability of clinical trials at Levine Children’s Hospital ensures that children in our community receive expert cancer care where they need the most – close to home.

With continued gifts and support from the community the DVL program for the Torrence E. Hemby Pediatric Hematology Oncology Center will be able to grow its resources, recruit new physicians, and enroll more patients in life-saving clinical trials.

Our goal is to make a significant difference in the lives of children with leukemia, lymphoma and other childhood cancers every day.

LOCAL BENEFICIARIES
Every dollar you give to fight childhood cancer goes to develop Phase I and Phase II clinical research trials here in Charlotte. These trials are the first steps in finding new treatments for cancer, and they’re the only ones available in all of western and central North Carolina. With your help, children in our community who are diagnosed with cancer can now receive the best care possible without having to travel a great distance to receive the treatments they need.

SUPPORTED BY CHARITIES
In 2010, members of the Carolinas KIDS Cancer Research Coalition generously pledged $5.7 million, laying the groundwork for supporting Phase I and Phase II clinical trials at Levine Children’s.

AN IMPORTANT CAUSE
Funds are used to recruit additional healthcare professionals, build research infrastructure and develop the diagnostic and treatment facilities required for clinical trials.

REACHING MORE CHILDREN
Levine Children’s Hospital is continually adding new clinical cancer trials, and the number of patients is growing – including patients from outside the Charlotte area.

The Carolinas Kids Cancer Research Coalition at Levine Children’s Hospital was organized by 8 of the region’s premier nonprofit organizations who came together with the common goal of funding advancements in clinical research for pediatric cancer at Levine Children’s Hospital; the initial gift was an endowment of $5.7 million that continues to grow with additional matching gifts and individual donations from generous community members.
