Almost one year ago, four-year-old Ava was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection, which doctors initially thought was caused by a virus. But after becoming pale and getting weaker by the day, Ava was rushed to Levine Children’s Hospital for more tests. Soon after, doctors made a devastating diagnosis: Ava had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

“Those words were like knives piercing my heart,” said Amanda, Ava’s mother. “Your whole world just stops.”

Since Ava’s diagnosis, she has undergone 3 bone marrow aspirations, 13 spinal taps, weekly chemotherapy, and an extremely tough regimen of steroids and injections at home. But the hardest part of Ava’s journey, thankfully, is now behind her.

Ava is now receiving maintenance therapy in the comfort of her home. And, signs of health and recovery are already returning to Ava’s little body.

Amanda credits her strength to doctors and nurses at the Torrence E. Hemby Jr. Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center at Levine Children’s Hospital, who have provided physical and emotional care for Ava and her family in ways they never would have expected. Amanda has also been inspired by the strength of her little girl, saying, “[Ava] is an amazing, brave little girl. She is my hero.” Beautiful words from a proud mom.
