What is Carolinas HealthCare Foundation?

Carolinas HealthCare Foundation serves as the primary point of contact for individual, foundation and corporate charitable support of Carolinas HealthCare System (a self-supporting, public, not-for-profit healthcare provider.) The Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Why should I contribute to Carolinas HealthCare Foundation?

Financial contributions help provide the resources necessary to maintain the highest level of excellence and patient support in our medical programs and services. Your individual acts of generosity help improve the quality of life for people in our region today and into the future.

Philanthropic gifts have always been important to Carolinas HealthCare System. Since its beginnings in 1939, gracious donors have significantly contributed to the growth and success of CHS programs and services.

How will my contribution be used?

Many donors elect to designate a hospital service or program as the recipient of their gift – to a fund that supports ovarian cancer research, or to cardiovascular rehabilitation. A donor may also choose to make an unrestricted gift to the Foundation. At the discretion of the Board of Directors, these gifts are designated for areas where needs are most critical and urgent.

Carolinas HealthCare Foundation hosts two giving societies – groups of donors who make multi-year pledges and participate in special projects. There’s also the Glimmer Guild, a special program that lets you purchase a crystal that hangs in the atrium of Levine Children’s Hospital.

Blumenthal Cancer Guild
The Blumenthal Cancer Guild is a society of friends of Levine Cancer Institute that will hold its first gatherings in 2012. The Guild is named in honor of the Blumenthal Family, whose founding gift helped establish the prestigious Blumenthal Cancer Center at Carolinas Medical Center in 1996.  Their gift represented the first million-dollar gift in the history of Carolinas HealthCare System, and helped substantially in raising the level of cancer services provided in this region.  The Guild will perpetually honor the visionary philanthropy of the Blumenthals. It will support multiple funds at Carolinas HealthCare Foundation that benefit Levine Cancer Institute, representing a variety of different cancers.

Starlight Society
The Starlight Society is a group of young professionals eager to help develop the health and well-being of children in the Charlotte and surrounding areas. Members pledge $240 over two-years to underwrite programs and services at Levine Children’s Hospital and often volunteer at fun charity events such as the Lite 102.9 Our Kids Come First Radiothon.

Dreamcatcher Society
Launched in 2004, the Dreamcatcher Society is composed of energetic individuals and couples who are interested in the health and well-being of children in Charlotte and the surrounding area. Members pledge $1,000 a year for five years to underwrite programs and resources at Levine Children’s Hospital, and the Society hosts social events and recruitment drives. Members also make time to visit the hospital to see how their contributions are making a difference.

Today, the Dreamcatcher Society has more than 200 members and has funded several crucial projects at the hospital: the Children’s Hospital Area Transport System (CHATS); Dream Racers (see photo on right), which are race-car-styled carts that patients ride in to get around the hospital; and the Indoor Robotic Transport System, a robotic train with a talking conductor that delivers medication to pediatric patients.

The Dreamcatcher Society is currently endowing the Levine Children’s Hospital’s Child Life Program  – one of the largest programs of its kind in the country. The talented Child Life team cares for the emotional needs of children and their families, educates them about the hospital experience and helps restore a sense of normalcy to their lives. There is never a bill for the Child Life services, but the benefits they provide are priceless.

Glimmer Guild
Individuals who join the Glimmer Guild can honor someone special by having a crystal hung in the prominent art piece in the atrium of Levine Children’s Hospital. Membership is $100.
